Located in Saline County Illinois in the States southern tip, and area known to locals as “Little Egypt”. Carrier Mills was founded as a mill town and named after George Washington Carrier’s Mill and later known for mining. The town’s population peaked in the 1920’s around 3000 but has steadily declined since to just over 1500 today. Before Carrier Mills was founded, just after the War 1812, about a mile south of town was Illinois’ first settlement of African Americans called the Pond Settlement after the swamp that surrounded it. According to local tradition, free Blacks of the settlement help runaway slaves and indentured servants. Today Carrier Mills has a 15% Black population due to the legacy of the Pond Settlement. The First National Bank has ONLY 7 LARGE AND 7 SMALL NOTES reported in the census.
