Located on the Gulf of Mexico, in Escambia County in the Florida Panhandle, Pensacola today is known for vacations and spring break.  The European settlement by the Spanish was established in 1559, before the settlement in St. Augustine on the Atlantic coast which is the oldest continuous inhabited settlement established by Europeans in the United States.  However the original settlement in Pensacola was abandoned after a hurricane and wasn’t re-established until the 1690’s.  Since then, the city has been under control of the Spanish, British, French, Americans, and Confederates during its history.  While this is a common bank, especially in the small size era, this a nice example with bold signatures of a Florida 2nd Charter Period note, with only 8 banks in the state issuing $10 1882-Date Backs.
